Google adds another nail to the Flash coffin

Vector image of HTML5 on an orange cubeChrome, the browser used by over 50% of the Internet, is officially preferring HTML5 ads over Flash content.

“In June, we announced that Chrome will begin pausing many Flash ads by default to improve performance for users. This change is scheduled to start rolling out on September 1, 2015.”

The switch will essentially pause Flash content on most webpages, this also means most Flash content won’t be served to Chrome users.

If you have banner adverts on your website or other websites advertising your business, make sure these are now either .gifs or HTML5.

If you are using Googles AdWords, most Flash ads uploaded to AdWords are automatically converted to HTML5. To ensure your ads continue to show on the Google Display Network, please follow these steps before September 1:

1) Identify any Flash ads in your account that aren’t eligible for automatic conversion: https://goo.gl/I4186A
2) Convert these ads to HTML5: https://goo.gl/ZBq5DR

This is another step down the long path that is the death of Flash altogether.

Instagram now supports Landscape and Portrait Images

Image of someone holding their mobile phone using InstagramInstagram has announced that in addition to square posts — you can now share photos and videos in both portrait and landscape orientation on Instagram.

“Square format has been and always will be part of who we are,” the company wrote on their official blog. “That said, the visual story you’re trying to tell should always come first.” Until today, it hasn’t — users who wanted to share their work in its landscape or portrait formats have had to use third party programs to add white space to the edge of their photos or videos, lowering the overall resolution of the image.

Now, when choosing a photo or video, you can tap the format icon to adjust the orientation to portrait or landscape instead of square. Once you share the photo, the full-sized version of it will appear to all of your followers in feed in a beautiful, natural way. To keep the clean feel of your profile grid, your post will appear there as a center-cropped square.

It’s a simple change, but it means big things. In addition to giving Instagram users more creative freedom, it also makes the social network a better advertising platform.
