Mobile Marketing in a Modern World: Is It Time to Retire Your Desktop Computer?

Illustration of a Desktop Computer and workspaceAs more and more individuals use mobile devices for browsing, buying, and connecting, the need for mobile-friendly content increases. The use of desktop PCs has decreased, especially when searching for property.

With the increase in mobile technology, it’s important that agents start to embrace other forms of communication and marketing and wean themselves off of the desktop – although not altogether.

The desktop computer can be hard to move away from, especially for those who love to type on a full-sized keyboard or see their property listings on a larger screen. The 2014 Nielsen Connected Consumer report indicates that sales in PCs are down and mobile usage is up, because individuals are browsing more and more on mobile devices.

According to Peter Birch, Managing Director of 4th Screen Advertising at Mobile Embrace, the role of desktop computers is definitely changing, but they’re not yet obsolete. Mobile offers news and creative ways to interact with customers on a more personal level.

Birch suggests the workplace role of mobile is only going to increase.  It will have a more prominent role, but desktop will maintain a practical and ongoing part—almost as a mothership—in business. The desktop computer is still highly beneficial for large storage capacity, the coordination of systems, and for processing high tech application and programs.

For agents, in particular, since much of the work done is on the move, mobile will continue to play an increasing role. The largest benefit of mobile over desktop is that it can reach customers on the go. With new methods of targeting consumers now available and media formats like HTML5, mobile campaigns are more creative, interactive, and entertaining than ever. This leads to higher levels of engagement and return on investment.

With the onset of this mobile era, here are three tips for mobile marketing:

3 Tips for Mobile Marketing

1. Use Different Advertisements for Different Platforms

Your marketing campaign will look different across platforms. Desktop and mobile advertising have different sets of rules and criteria. Make sure you do your research and adapt your content appropriately.

2. Mobile is Meant to Enhance Your Business

It can be easy to get caught up in mobile and to spend all of your time working on mobile content. Mobile is meant to be used to enhance your business, not to be your business. Use it to emphasise and enhance aspects of your business.

3. Keep Your Desktop

Don’t sell your desktop computer yet. It’s still a critical part of your business and highly useful. While desktops may become less necessary in households that are shifting more and more towards smartphone and tablet ownership, it’s still necessary in business. With benefits such as high storage capacity, speed, and coordination of internal systems, it’ll remain a business staple for the foreseeable future.
